Dr Susan Newton is a Palliative Medicine Specialist. She completed her undergraduate medical degree at University of Newcastle (UoN) NSW, and gained her Palliative Medicine Foundation Fellowship in 2000 (FAChPM). Since then she has completed a Graduate Diploma in Palliative Medicine (ECU) in 2000 and a Masters in Professional Ethics (UNSW) in 2005.

Dr Newton has 25 years of experience as a Palliative Care doctor in the public health sector, working at Mercy Hospice, Newcastle Calvary Mater Hospital; the Central Coast Palliative Care Service; and more recently, as Senior Staff Specialist in Palliative Medicine in the Hunter New England Local Health District (The Maitland Hospital).

Dr Newton is a member of the Australian New Zealand Society of Palliative Medicine; The NSW Palliative Care Association; the Australian Medical Association; and is a Conjoint Senior Lecturer at the University of Newcastle.

She is a published author (Palliative Care of the Older Patient in Geriatric Medicine, Nair et al) and is a former Subeditor in Palliative Medicine of The Internal Medicine Journal. She has presented papers to local, state, national and international conferences on The Virtual Hospice: an innovative end-of-life care program she co-designed and directed, at The Maitland Hospital.

Dr Newton is the Director of Hearth Care, delivering consulting and education in Supportive and Palliative Care.
